What conditions are required for lice eggs to hatch?

Lice eggs, or nits, need specific conditions to hatch successfully:

  1. Temperature: Nits require a stable, warm environment close to the human body temperature, stages of lice  around 98.6°F (37°C). The warmth provided by the scalp is crucial; without it, eggs are less likely to hatch, which is why lice lay eggs very close to the scalp.

  2. Humidity: Scalp humidity also aids the development of nits. Dry environments may hinder the egg’s hatching process, while the natural moisture on the scalp supports it.

  3. Attachment to Hair: Lice eggs need to be attached to hair strands near the scalp to benefit from warmth and protection. The female louse uses a glue-like secretion to stick each egg firmly to hair, ensuring it remains in a favorable position until it hatches.

  4. Time: Nits take approximately 7-10 days to develop fully, depending on temperature and environmental conditions. If the environment is too cool or dry, the eggs may take longer to hatch or fail to hatch altogether.

Without these conditions, nits may not hatch, which is why lice infestation is rarely spread from surfaces or items without direct contact.
